How to recognize romance scams in international dating
Scams can begin with attentive conversation and an apparently convincing profile. Focus on behaviour and pressure, rather than the person’s nationality or the quality of their photos.
Warning patterns
Watch for rapid declarations of love followed by emergencies, requests to keep payments secret, investment advice, cryptocurrency links and repeated refusal to speak live. A realistic video call does not guarantee safety: recordings and manipulated media can be misleading.
Make no urgent financial decision
Do not transfer money, buy gift cards, share account access or follow an investment link from a romantic contact. Discuss the situation with someone outside the relationship. If a person reacts angrily to reasonable caution, stop.
If you suspect a scam
Stop contact, keep relevant messages privately and contact your payment provider if a transfer was made. Report the concern to the platform or introduction team with a factual summary. Do not pay someone who promises to recover your money for an upfront fee.
