Cross-cultural relationship guide: conversations beyond stereotypes
Shared values do not follow automatically from a nationality. Good cross-cultural communication starts with curiosity about a particular person and room for differences.
Make important language clear
Use short sentences for important decisions. Ask each other to explain an agreement in their own words. Translation tools can help with a conversation, but misunderstandings about money, commitments or relocation deserve extra time.
Discuss family expectations
Ask how much family members are involved in decisions and what each person considers respectful. Avoid assuming that one partner must adopt the other’s traditions. Consider which practices matter to you and where you can be flexible.
Compare future plans gradually
Talk about children, careers, distance and possible living arrangements over several conversations. A wish to meet is not an agreement to move countries. For immigration or legal questions, seek qualified, current advice rather than relying on a match or agency promise.
